The Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki is recruiting

part-time teacher of baroque violin

for the Department of Early Music for a fixed period.

Tasks

The main duty of the teacher is baroque violin tuition. The students to be instructed are baroque violin majors or minors, and possibly also students from Junior Academy. Duties may also include jury work in exams and student admissions. Teaching and other tasks will be agreed together with the Head of Department at the start of each semester. Languages of tuition are Finnish and/or English.

The Sibelius Academy is not able to commit to offer teaching work, but if there is a need for hourly baroque violin teaching, lessons can also be offered to a person selected through this call.

What we expect from You

  • Teaching skills and experience
  • Excellent command of the instrument
  • Solid experience in orchestra performance, chamber music and performing as a soloist
  • Willingness and ability to support students in their studies
  • Good collaborative and interactive skills
  • Good command of the English language
  • Master of Music degree or an equivalent suitable university degree; a person with no master’s degree but considerable familiarity with the field in question may also be deemed qualified

Demonstration of proficiency

We will call the most suitable applicants for a demonstration of proficiency, which will take place on Wednesday 6 March 2024. The demonstration will include teaching and artistic samples and an interview. The teaching sample will include teaching baroque violin repertoire to a student of bachelor- or master-level studies. Teaching tasks will be announced later. In the artistic demonstration, duration of max. 10 minutes, the candidate plays a piece / pieces (or movements of pieces) of free choice. Sibelius Academy will arrange an accompanist, but it is also possible to bring an accompanist of one’s own.
