The DocMus Doctoral School at the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki (Uniarts Helsinki) is hiring a University Lecturer (Senior Lecturer) for a full-time position for a fixed term of four years, beginning on 1 August 2024.
DocMus is a doctoral school and a research unit focusing on music performance, composition and music theory, and church music. The field of our artistic and scholarly research focused on the Western tradition of art music is wide, ranging from antiquity to contemporary music. Our doctoral school has approximately 80 students in three study programs (artist, research and applied studies). We encourage them to create an individual artist and researcher profile and to network with the national and international researcher community.
Our research is multidisciplinary and explores various musical domains. Our researchers work both in their own projects and in wider research projects. We develop research in cooperation with other actors at Uniarts Helsinki. We offer our students and researchers an internationally networked and active community.

Eligibility of the applicant will be assessed with regard to the application material and for the applicants to be shortlisted in teaching demonstrations and interviews to be held on 18 April 2024. During the interview, applicants present their previous research. The presentation may also include musical parts (primarily performed in an interview situation, if possible.) A grand piano is available in the interview situation. The need for any other instruments should be notified well in advance of the teaching demonstration and interview.
The languages of instruction at Uniarts Helsinki are Finnish, Swedish and English. At DocMus Doctoral School, teaching takes place in Finnish and English. Applicants are required to have a good command of languages of instruction (Finnish or English, proficiency in Finnish is considered an advantage). For international applicants, we require proficiency in English. Language skills are assessed in relation to work tasks. Finnish applicants who have received their education in Finnish or Swedish are required to have a good command of Finnish or Swedish and a satisfactory knowledge of the second domestic language.
In full-time lecturer positions, the total annual working hours are 1,612 hours. The position requires working in Finland for the duration of the employment relationship. In other words, the assignment requires the doctoral student to live in Finland for the duration of the employment relationship.
The salary is determined in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. The task-specific salary component is on level 7. In addition, a salary component based on personal performance is paid. The monthly salary at the beginning of employment will be approximately EUR 4,700 – 4,900.
