The Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki is now recruiting

part-time teacher of tuba

for a fixed-term employment relationship starting in the fall 2024. The teacher will work in the Department of Wind Instruments, Percussions and Harp.

Tasks

The main duty of the teacher is tuba tuition. The students to be instructed are tuba majors or minors, and possibly also students from the Junior Academy. In addition, the duties include jury work in the student exams and admissions. The working hours and tasks will be agreed with the Head of Department at the start of each semester. Languages of tuition are Finnish and/or English.

The Sibelius Academy is unable to commit to offering, but if there is need for tuba part-time teachers, we will offer work for the person who has been selected via this recruitment. The employment contracts of the part-time teachers are made for one semester / school year at a time.

What we expect from You

  • Teaching skills and teaching experience
  • Excellent command of the instrument
  • Solid experience in orchestra performance, chamber music, and soloistic work
  • Willingness and ability to support students in their studies
  • Good collaborative and interaction skills
  • Good command of the English language
  • Master of Music degree or an equivalent suitable university degree; a person with no master’s degree but considerable familiarity with the field in question may also be deemed qualified

The assignment requires that the teacher lives and works in Finland during the employment relationship.

Demonstration of proficiency

We will call the most suitable applicants for the demonstration of aptitude, which will take place on Saturday 31 August 2024 starting at 10:00 a.m. at the Sibelius Academy R building, the chamber music hall (address Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu 9, 00100 Helsinki). The evaluation event will include the following parts:

  1. Artistic performance, duration maximum 15 minutes, free-choice program, two works (or parts) of different styles.
  2. Teaching demonstration ca. 30 min. The demonstration may contain both 1:1 teaching and ensemble coaching. The content will be announced in invitation letter.
  3. Interview, approximately 15 minutes.
