The Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki is recruiting

a part-time teacher of global music junior academy ensemble

for a fixed-term employment relationship starting in the fall 2025. The teacher will work in the Department of Global music, Junior academy.

Tasks

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Ensemble Teacher to lead and inspire our Global Music Ensemble. The ideal candidate will have strong understanding of intercultural music practices, and the ability to engage students in both ensemble performance and creative music-making.

As an Ensemble Teacher, you will work directly with students, leading rehearsals and supporting them in their development. You will guide students through various ensemble-based tuition, helping them integrate musical concepts such as global rhythmics, improvisation, composing, ear-training, and expression. Your role will also include fostering an awareness of different music cultures, ensuring that students can appreciate and apply musical structures from a variety of traditions.

The employment contracts of the part-time teachers are made for one semester / school year at a time. 

What we expect from You

Master of Music degree or an equivalent suitable university degree; a person with no master’s degree but considerable familiarity with the field in question may also be deemed qualified. Experience teaching ensemble music to young musicians, particularly in intercultural or diverse musical contexts Strong proficiency in at least one musical instrument or voice, with an understanding of a variety of musical traditions Ability to foster a positive and inclusive learning environment, encouraging creativity, teamwork, and respect for diverse musical traditions. Good command of the English language (Finnish is a plus) Good communication and organizational skills

The assignment requires that the teacher lives and works in Finland during the employment relationship.

Demonstration of proficiency

We will call the most suitable applicants for the demonstration of aptitude, which will be held at a date to be announced later, in May-June 2025 at the Töölö campus of the Uniarts Helsinki.

The evaluation event will include the following parts:

  1. Artistic performance, duration maximum 15 minutes, to be played on your instrument of choice. A free-choice programme.
  2. Ensemble teaching demonstration ca. 30 min, you can decide the content of the session. We will provide students for the demonstration.
  3. Interview, approximately 15 minutes.

The position includes teaching underage students. A criminal record extract must be presented to Uniarts before a contract of employment can be signed for the job in question. The Act on Checking the Criminal Background of Persons Working with Children (504/2002) obliges Uniarts to ask persons working with people under 18 years of age to present an extract from their criminal record (when the employment lasts longer than three months).
