The Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki (Uniarts Helsinki) is hiring 

a Lecturer in Music Business 

for a full-time employment position with a fixed-term two-year period running from 1 August 2025 to 31 July 2027.

The working environment

A two-year English-language programme, leading to a Master of Arts (Art and Design) degree, will launch at the Sibelius Academy of Uniarts Helsinki in autumn 2025. The first-of-its-kind master’s programme in Finland will equip music creators and industry professionals with the commercial and management expertise needed to navigate global markets, strengthen exports and boost the growth of Finnish music. As a lecturer, you will work in the Department of Arts Management. The department staff consists of two lecturers, a professor, a programme coordinator, part-time teachers and visitors. The department currently has two study programmes: (1) Arts Management, Society and Creative Entrepreneurship and (2) The Cultural Study of Music. This new Music Business master’s degree programme will be the third one, and 15 students will be admitted this year.

The tasks of the Lecturer

Your areas of responsibility will include the following:

  • Teaching and supervising the students of the Music Business master’s degree programme
  • Planning and developing the study programme
  • Networking and collaborating with Finnish and international parties in the music business
  • Developing societal initiatives and impact in the music business
  • Supporting and encouraging students to graduate on time
  • Nurturing connections to other departments and programmes of Sibelius Academy and Uniarts Helsinki
  • Participating in student admissions and the assessment of study attainments
  • Other tasks, including duties related to teaching, curriculum planning and administrative work

As a lecturer, you will work closely with the Head of Department and other staff members, actively contributing to the further development and well-being of the department. In addition, you will be an active member in the whole community of the academy and the broader university. You can also actively engage in the research activities of the university.

Competence requirements and selection criteria

We expect you to have a suitable master’s degree, a solid track record in both activities and expert tasks in the field of music business, experience in international cooperation within the music business and, also, an understanding of the Finnish context.

Other key selection criteria include the following:

  • Pedagogical/teaching/lecturing experience and skills
  • Good existing networks within the music business
  • The ability to integrate industry practice and/or research into teaching
  • Excellent cooperation and interaction skills and intercultural communication skills
  • Knowledge of diversity, inclusion and sustainable initiatives in the music industry
  • The ability to build and maintain networks
  • The ability to inspire critical thinking
  • The ability to promote creativity and new initiatives
  • Proficiency in digital tools, including online teaching platforms and/or collaborative technologies

In addition, we consider the following to be an advantage:

  • Teaching experience at the university / higher education level
  • Management/leadership studies
  • Entrepreneurial skills and experience
  • Pedagogical studies

Language skills

The languages of instruction at the University of the Arts Helsinki are Finnish, Swedish and English. Music Business training is mainly provided in English; thus, an excellent command of English is required. Uniarts Helsinki staff is expected to commit to the university’s language policy, which is called ‘happy multilingualism’.  

Working hours and salary

In full-time lecturer positions, the total annual working hours are 1,612 hours. The position requires working in Finland for the duration of the employment relationship. In other words, the assignment requires the lecturer to live in Finland for the duration of the employment relationship.

The salary is determined in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. The task-specific salary component is on level 5–6. In addition, a salary component based on personal performance is paid. The monthly gross salary at the beginning of employment will be approximately EUR 3,500–4,200 (in the full-time post).
